As we look to the future of North Terrace and the impending retirement of our Lead Minister Bill Meaige in the year 2015, the elders have taken steps to begin the Lead Minister Transition process. One of the first steps was to form a Transition Team.  On August 21, 2011, Bill Meaige and the Transition Team shared information following our morning worship service regarding the long-term plan for Bill’s transition out of the Lead Minister role at North Terrace Church of Christ.  The goal of the leadership is to remain in the center of God’s will during this time and to allow His leading. The transition plan has been put in motion and will conclude with a new Lead Minister fully assuming the responsibilities by 2015.

Our objective is to hire at some point after May 2012 when we pay off the Family Life Center. After an extended sabbatical, Bill will return in the role of Seniors’ Minister, a position  previously held by Wayne Stout. This decision was made in order to be able to fully minister to those over the age of fifty; a segment which represents 1/3 of our congregation. We think this is important as we continue to grow a multigenerational church. Bill summed up his time here saying, “I have had the privilege of being your preacher since 1984. Before I arrived, I was confident that the Lord was directing me here. Since my arrival I have experienced one validation after another. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be here through seven presidential elections. Thank you for your graciousness. I can only hope that you have been as blessed with me as I have been with you...This has not been my job but my life. During the past 27 plus years, this congregation has grown tremendously in its attendance and in its influence in this community; and through our missions program, to the world. I am so blessed to be associated with you. I have grown to love this church as my family.”

Steve Robison, a member of the Transition Team, shared information from the team and outlined the responsibilities placed on them by the eldership. The team will collect information, advise in the search process, and will evaluate the health of the church. In an effort to accomplish their goals, the team will:

  • Conduct surveys of the congregation and evaluate our spiritual health and our ministries.
  • Ensure effective communication throughout the transition
  • Conduct Round Table discussions with the congregation to solicit input.
  • Maintain a timeline for the transition
Once the evaluation is completed, a separate and larger Search Committee will be formed and in conjunction with the ministers, this group will help identify candidates, will evaluate them, and will bring them in for interviews. As the elders finalize a candidate, that minister will be presented to the congregation for confirmation per our bylaws.
This is a critical time for North Terrace. No church is more at risk of losing its unity and effectiveness than when a minister, who has led a church through multiple levels of growth over three decades of service, exits. The elders looked at other successful transitions in similar and larger churches. The approach we selected is to hire a successor before Bill leaves. The new minister will share pulpit duties in increasing percentages over the course of the transition (for example, 70/30, 50/50, 30/70).  This should allow a very smooth transition. With the oversight of the elders and Bill, the new minister will immediately assume administrative leadership of the staff and ministries of the church.

Please join us in prayer for this process. We ask you to pray for God’s will to be fulfilled, North Terrace to be spiritually healthy and unified and our ministers and the leadership be strengthened.

Round Table Discussions: The Lead Minister Transition Team will be holding 90-minute round table discussions with members of the congregation on October 30th, November 6th, and November 13th after the 2nd service. (A light lunch will be provided to participants.) One weekday evening, November 15th at 6:30 p.m., will also be offered. The purpose is to answer questions and to receive input/feedback from NTCoC members regarding the transition. Everyone is welcome to participate. Each session will be limited to 40 participants, and you must sign up in advance at the Connection Point. Contact: Amy James (453-2951)
