History |
The
original church met in the upstairs of the Wells
Drug Store on the corner of Linden and Lee Streets
in Zanesville, Ohio. After breaking away, its
members began meeting in the I.O.O.F. Hall on
Main Street on May 9, 1920. At that time, the
church was called The Central Christian Church. W.B.
Hendershot was requested to serve as minister,
during the next two years the congregation met
in the Hall. W.D. Ward, then a field worker of
the Ohio Christian Missionary Society, was present
during this time and had full charge of organizing
the church. |

On
February 18,1922 a lot was purchased at 1823
Maple Avenue for construction of a permanent
building. On August 13, 1922 the church left
the Odd Fellows Hall. While waiting for the construction
of a frame building, they began meeting for worship
and teaching in the home of H.L. Driggs at 1542
Maple Avenue, the current location of Tee Jays
Restaurant. After many struggles and delays,
the frame building was finally completed. |
| The
first services were held on Sunday, October 22,1922.
The church was formally dedicated, free of debt,
on its first anniversary, October 21, 1923. Several
years later a brick structure was added onto the
existing frame building. Movies were shown during
the week to help raise money to cover the expenses
and keep the church operational. |
Due
to the need for expansion and growth in the summer
of 1969, land was purchased at 1569 Bowers Lane
for a future church site. Groundbreaking ceremonies
were held in August of 1977 and the first worship
services were held on Sunday, April 15, 1978
under the leadership of Frank C. Maple. |

In
April of 1984, our current Senior Minister, William
L. Meaige, began his ministry here. By January
1993, with the generous support of our faithful
members, the sanctuary was completely remodeled,
with new carpet, paint, and pew upholstery and
lighting systems. |

1998
marked a grand chapter in the history of the
North Terrace Church of Christ with the completion
of a family life and worship center. We
are currently facing another challenge as we
have outgrown our current eduuation space and
have begun to formulate plans for an educational
wing. |
Praise
God! He continues to bless us immeasurably
more than we could ever have asked or imagined! |
